Postpartum Hair Loss
Hey Mama, let’s talk about that postpartum hair loss. Losing all of that beautiful and luxurious pregnancy hair, freaking out about the handfuls coming out in the shower or every time you brush your hair. Believe me, I get it. This can actually happen when there’s an imbalance of hormones. Don’t worry though, it is totally normal thanks to an increased level of estrogen in your body when you are pregnant. Estrogen stops the hair in its resting place, so your hair that would normally fall out stays where it is, resulting in thicker beautiful hair in pregnancy. When you give birth the estrogen levels start to decrease just a little bit. As a result, all that hair that was resting starts to fall out again. It starts around 3 or 4 months postpartum and usually lasts about 3 to 6 months. All of that being said, I have some tips for coping with that dreaded postpartum hair loss. Number one, continue taking your prenatal vitamins in the postpartum period. I always recommend 9 out of 9. Baby is in for 9 months, do all the same things and take care of yourself for 9 months after. Go get a haircut, go see your hairdresser. They can style your thinner hair into something manageable and maybe something that you like a little better. Avoid putting your hair back into a ponytail with a tight scrunchie, it just pulls the hair and encourages more hair loss. If you do have patchy hair at the hairline this style will only show it off. Don’t over brush, wash or style your hair. Use quality deep conditioner and scalp treatments. I’m going to help you out with that in a minute. Good products are a must, use a good brush, one that doesn’t tug on your hair, especially after washing it. Use a good dry shampoo to avoid washing your hair daily. Remember the vast majority of women this is just a phase. I know it’s a crappy one, but it is just a phase nonetheless.
Postpartum Hair Support Blend
- 4 ounces Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 24 Clary Sage
- 16 Siberian Fir
- 8 Rosemary
Put that in a bottle and gently mix it up. Put a little in the palm of your hand and massage into your scalp at least 30 minutes before you wash your hair. It can be at night and then you can just wash your hair in the morning. Use it every time you wash your hair, even if it’s not everyday that is okay.
